Modernize Your Outdated Web Design

January 26th, 2012 by

You have a website, but how does it compare to your competitors? Whose site has a bigger impact on users? And more importantly, who is getting the sale?

If your site has been static for a few years and hasn’t been updated by a professional web designer, it’s a good bet that you’re long overdue for a redesign.

Here’s the real issue; from the user’s perspective, websites that are not regularly redesigned and updated, even if they contain strong, useful content, appear out of date, even abandoned. A visitor to your website is going to decide to stay or leave your website in just a few seconds. If the design looks out of date, there is very little chance of that visitor staying at your site, because the design has convinced them that your site is not relevant.

The reason why is simple enough to understand; web design is constantly changing as are the tools designers use to create websites. Websites that haven’t been updated in several years look old, or worse, acts old. Does it take more than 10 seconds for your home page to load? Designers today know how to avoid that problem, and having that problem suggest to the user that the site has been abandoned by the owner.

What about the website navigation structure? A links laid out in an intuitive manor that’s natural for the user or does your site have a standard navigation bar across the top of the site?

What about search engine optimization? Has your site been optimized so that the content you spend so much time putting together can be found by users?

What about the general appearance of your website? Does it look old? Does it employ modern design elements like flash? The appearance of your website is important. It’s the first thing visitors see and it is ultimately what is going to make them stay or leave your site in the few seconds they will spend making the decision when they first hit your homepage.

In short; it is 2009, so why does your website look so 1995?

Web Design Fundamentals

January 26th, 2012 by

You might think that this article is about technical stuff that relates to web design fundamentals; however, I decided to write a piece that is very much based more on the actual visual experience of your web project. There are several things that should be taken into consideration like navigation and layout that truly matter to your project.

Navigational flow and functionality are of utmost importance to any website whether it’s business or personal – coupled with faster loading times of your web page and quicker access to the most important parts of the information you offer. Of course, most of this you will only find out once you have installed an analytics program and begin receiving worthy amounts of traffic for you to perform a full analysis of your design.

Analyzing the way that people interact with your site, the pages that have the longest and most fruitful views etc will help you better understand what your users are looking for and better position them within your site. Many people have forgotten that the visual style of your site should be pleasing enough to capture a visitors attention and bring more traffic to your site. It is also important to remember that keeping the visuals down to a minimum can be helpful to search engine optimization, however, this does not remove the idea that your visual design can still be very pleasing.

Keeping advertising and any extra information down to a bare minimum will also help you to ensure that you always keep the visitors attention on the product and/or service that you are offering.

Remembering what your visitors are looking for and what your site is meant for will help to keep the visitor traffic flowing through out your site.

Everything should be easy enough to find and you should consider what you would like to see more off or where you would go looking for a similar product.

Always keep in mind that content is king, it always has been, and it always will be! People are always looking for the best information that pertains to their searches and if you are targeting something in specific ensure that you have a lot of value for them as this will bring about trust and a good and loyal traffic base for your website.

Web Design – Gone to the Blogs

January 26th, 2012 by

Now days it is all to easy to implement a complete website using blogging software such as WordPress. With the number of websites being designed and implemented by WordPress.org blogging software on daily basis is on the increase because of its ease of use and functionality, has web design gone to the blogs?

It is easy to search for templates and themes on the thousands of websites that provide them online and use them on your WordPress blogs while configuring your blog to be used as a complete CMS solution that’s simple, but does this replace good, old fashioned web design. Tell us what you think in the comments form on this page.

This is my opinion – A blog should be a blog. Period. People should consider designing websites from the ground up as this ensures that your idea is completely unique and not used on elsewhere on the net. Sometimes this can prove difficult especially if your site involves a lot of high end dynamic content, forms, sales, etc but it is still not an excuse.

The best thing to do in the case of being original would be to learn how to theme your WordPress installation to match that of your entire site. I found this tutorial to be of a lot of help. There are countless others out there that would help you further your knowledge of how to theme a wordpress blog – and it’s a great way to get more back link, just give themes away for free!
