Getting the Most Out of Your Web Designer
Wednesday, November 30th, 2011We are often asked how long it takes to design and build a website. The answer depends on different factors. There are a few things that you as a customer can do to make the project run as smoothly and as quickly as possible.
The Brief:
Sitting down with your web designer to discuss your requirements is an important first step in making sure that the designer understands what your website should do and what kind of design aesthetic it should have. Do your preparation before the meeting so that you have a general idea of what sections the site will have and what kind of elements you that you have seen on other websites that you like or dislike. The more information you give the designer the more chance you have of receiving a design that hits the mark.
Feedback:
The most important gift that you as a customer can give to your web designer is constructive feedback. No feedback is the one thing that constantly stands in the way of a designer making progress on a project. By giving your designer regular feedback that is on topic, constructive, honest and detailed you will be surprised at how quickly the project moves along. If you are stuck for what kind of feedback to give try to give the design a day or two so that you can gauge whether you like it or not. If you have anyone whose opinion on design and functionality you trust then ask them about it. What not to do is go to everyone you know for their opinions. That can lead to too many cooks syndrome.
Design Approval:
Before your design is turned into a fully functional website you should agree on the design layout with your designer. It is important to get the layout set before you move on to the build phase. What might be a small change to you could mean a lot more work for the developer/designer who has already planned out how the HTML and CSS will be constructed. There should still be some allowances for the client to change minor details however.
The most important thing when having a website designed and built is to communicate as much as possible with your designer and that you’re site requirements are clear and well thought out.
