Wireless Router Cable Modems – Upgrade Your Network

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Since the average household’s computer network is larger than what it was five or more years ago, many home computer users have found a need for wireless router cable modems. These modems are simply electronic devices that work efficiently to deliver an internet connection that is lightning quick and extremely reliable. Also, a cable modem router can wirelessly rebroadcast a single internet connection in order to allow simultaneous internet access for multiple PCs, eradicating the necessity of cables and multiple Ethernet ports and allowing people to use their laptop anywhere inside of their home.

The Inner Workings of the Wireless Router Cable Modem

The technology utilized by wireless router cable modems lets data be transferred in small “packages” between all computers that are connected via the same network. The router itself can be thought of in a similar fashion as a straight path allowing the user to connect wirelessly between two or more computers. The PC that has a direct connection to the cable modem is the host computer; all other computers on the host’s network, including Wi-Fi capable laptops, are subsequently set up to receive internet access from the host.

Any one chosen should have quick data transmission speeds as well as be compatible with every operating system in the modem’s network. However, not all wireless routers are designed to work with Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The router should also be fast and simple to install, preferably using a setup wizard that can guide the user through the device’s settings, giving them control over who accesses their network. Of course, protecting a wireless internet connection with a password is always recommended.

The Ideal Place to Install a Wireless Router Device

Ideally, the best place to install this device is in a centralized location in the home. Because this device must be running at all times, the blinking lights are not well-suited for bedrooms and entertaining areas. And a central location can provide the most optimum wireless coverage as possible in the home. The only way to know the extent of wireless coverage is to test the device’s signal strength throughout various points in the house. For those who live in large homes or areas with shoddy signal service, additional plug-in hubs that fit into a wall socket greatly boost the wireless router cable modem’s internet coverage.

Other Uses for the Wireless Router Cable Modem

In the majority of instances, a wireless router is purchased and used with the intent of having convenient access to the internet. But there are other purposes for wireless router cable modems. First, technologically inclined individuals can use their network of computers that are linked to the router to engage in fast file sharing, periodic hardware backups, and archive dating. Those who love the media features available on computers can network every PC on a single router to have direct access to movie, music, and television show libraries. Fax machines, printers, and webcams can all be linked via a personal computer network, allowing the user one-touch access anywhere in the home to all of their PC accessories.

The True Way to Speed Up Your Computer

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Noticed your computer slowing down over time? Most people/advertisements will tell you it is everything from a fragmented hard drive to a registry that is a mess. Sorting out these two can definitely lead to better performance, but there is really only one way to massively improve the speed of your computer short of buying a new one – RAM memory.

The digital world is amazing. Look at phones. We went from large cheesy cell phones to tiny phones to the iPhone all in less than a two decades. Hardware and software improves at a rate that is simply staggering. Unfortunately, this also turns your new computer with its cutting edge technology into the equivalent of the horse and buggy in three years or so.

Companies in the computer world will usually try to convince you that the issue with speed is either a gummed up system or insufficient processing power. While these can be issues, the bigger problem is usually found in your RAM. Simply put, you do not have anywhere near enough of it.

RAM is random access memory. It is a bit hard to describe, but it is critical to the performance of your computer. It serves as a sort of crib notes for computer data. The operating system on your computer stores frequently used bits of data on the RAM so it can access it easily and quickly. Let’s assume you found a 300 page book on how to keep your relationship in good shape. After reading the entire book, you realize there are only 20 pages that are really key. An operating system would pull these out and place them in the RAM memory so they would be easily accessed without having to reread the entire book every time. This would obviously speed things up.

Most PCs used to come with 256k of RAM. Now the cheap ones come with 512 with better models carrying 1gb. How much should you add to your computer? As much as you can. I have 4GB in mine. You can determine what you need by using free online tests from companies like Crucial Memory. The RAM costs between $30 and $50 per gigabyte. You buy it and just plug it into your motherboard. The difference in speed and performance is similar to when you went from dial up modems to cable or DSL to access the web. It’s amazing!

Cleaning your registry and hard drive can help improve the performance of your computer, but not a lot. If you really want to go fast, buy more RAM.
