What is Disc Golf?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

If you’ve reached this article, you’re probably wanting to know about disc golf. I’ll be happy to tell what I know about this fun pastime.

First of all, it is called disc golf, not Frisbee golf. Frisbee is a registered name belonging to the Wham-O corporation, from what I’ve been told. Frisbees are the typical toys you’re probably more accustomed to seeing at the beach, at the park or for playing with your dog. They are generally easy to throw, easy to catch, and fun to play around with.

A disc golf disc, on the other hand, is not as large, not so soft, and is not something you want to catch. If you got hit with one, you might get hurt, so be careful.

Now that you know what we throw, let’s talk about the activity itself. Disc golf is similar to normal golf. Individuals work to get from a tee box to a target. Only instead of using balls and clubs, like in “ball golf,” disc golfers throw a variety of discs. Also, instead of having a hole in the ground with a flag pin, disc golfers aim at a specially created basket. These targets consist of a pole that supports a set of chains that work to catch the flying disc and a basket underneath. The goal is to hit the chains with your disc and have it remain suspended in the chains or in the basket.

In ball golf, the golfers use a variety of clubs to approach the hole and put the ball in. Likewise, disc golfers use a variety of discs to approach the target. There are are three general classes of discs: drivers, mid-range and putters. Pros can throw a driver over 500 feet, but a recreational player feels pretty good with anything over 300 feet.

In addition to the three classes of discs, there are a variety of disc designs that affect how the disc travels in the air. Discs can be overstable, stable, or understable. For a right handed backhand throw an overstable discs will curve to the left throughout the flight. A stable disc will fly mostly straight and then fade left as it slows down. An understable disc will curve to the right through most of the flight, but fade a bit left as is slows. A golfer can use these discs to navigate difficult holes.

One of the best things about disc golf is that, once you have equipment, it is usually free to play. Disc golf courses are shorter than traditional courses and therefore require less land. In addition, they do not require the maintenance, watering or mowing that a regular course requires. In fact, disc golf courses are often placed in underused parts of local, regional or state parks. There are now almost 3000 places in America to play.

One of the main benefits of disc golf is that there is a very low financial commitment to beginning. Sure, many people spend money on fancy golf bags, high-end plastic and other perks, but you can get started with just a few items and a bag or backpack to carry them in.

That’s about all I will write on this subject today, but look for more posts here about disc golfing. I’ll be discussing disc golf courses, equipment and technique in more detail soon.

Reconfigure Your Putting Stroke Or Golf Swing Using Your Personnel Rhythm

Friday, August 21st, 2009

It can not be disputed that the golf swing is as personnel and individualistic as you are. We each impart some nuance into our swings due to our own body styles and/or golf habits we’ve done for many years, some times without even knowing we do.

Watching the pro’s swing we see solid foundations with their lower bodies; good rotations from the shoulders and hips; quality hand/impact timing at the golf ball; and near perfect finish positions.  Most amateurs may only incorporate one of these features into their swings. If their particular ball flight is left or right of center, then quality hand/impact timing is not one of them.

If you are wanting to incorporate a quality golf habit into your golf swing for consistency, you need to find your personnel body rhythm. This rhythm is defined by everything you do on a subconscious level daily. In your normal relaxed state, your body rhythm is there.

Your activities are run by this rhythm; walking, talking, eating and thinking. Some individuals move quickly, others much slower and the balance of people are somewhere in between.

So how would you know what your rhythm is, if this concept is new to you?

Let’s take a look at an easy way to determine this. At some point in the near future you will be walking somewhere and won’t be consciously aware of this rhythm. Maybe your mind will reflect back to this article and you will become consciously aware. When this occurs or you realize the time is right to find your body rhythm, count to four (4), one (1) for each step you are taking and repeat. A rhythmic cadence will become apparent.

This is your body rhythm and you will want to find a word, phrase, song, or some clue element that you can reference to for future recall. Once you know this rhythm and know the cadence sequence, get to the practice range or putting green. Utilizing this rhythmic cadence, incorporate your full golf swing or putting stroke sequence into the cadence.

By implementing your cadence into each practice session and aligning your golf swing with it, you will improve your golf swing. The timing for each position throughout the swing will be correct for your own body type; improving your golf swing, your putting stroke, and implementing a good golfing habit into your game.

This rhythm factor improves your timing because you are aligning your activity, the golf swing, with your own true body rhythm. Synchronizing your own personnel body rhythm to any activity you do requires less energy to complete and the activity is then the most proficient use of your talents.

Reality dictates that consistency comes from aligning our personnel body rhythm with our golf swing. You can not improve as a golfer if you are fighting this, trying to swing too fast when your rhythm is slower only causes hooks; trying to swing too slow when your rhythm is fast causes slices.

I believe that if you make the conscious effort to determine your personnel body rhythm and then incorporate this into your golf swing and putting stroke, you will improve your golf game. If nothing else, you will find more consistency in your golf swing. And all of us golfers look for consistency, even though we believe the consistency we think we are searching for is in score.

Give this a conscious effort. Find your rhythm and match your golf swing and putting stroke to that rhythm. You may find that next $5.00 Nassau game going your way.

The Best Exercise For the Senior Golfer Involves the Mind and the Body – Feel Better & Lose Strokes

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Golf for seniors can be so more than just a weekend pastime. At it’s best golf is exercise, companionship, competition and fun all rolled into one. No matter what age you are you can have a lot of wonderful golf years ahead of you if you take care of you body and you mind.

The Most Important Exercises You Can Do

Sure golf itself is exercise. And many senior golfers play golf for the exercise it provides them. This is good — but many seniors could actually benefit from some simple additional exercises — both for the body and the mind. Then not only would they get healthier — they might actually play better play and would reduce their risk of injury.

The Most Important Exercise You Can Do for Your Body

For the senior golfer, nothing — absolutely NOTHING — beats stretching. Golf is far more physically demanding on the body than most people think. It’s not a cardio workout that gets the heart racing like running or bike riding so most people think it must be easy. Like bowling. But even though you may never breath hard during a round, the golf swing is a demanding movement that stresses muscles in ways that nothing else in life does.

The Most Important Exercise You Can Do for Your Mind

You may not think of golf for seniors as exercising the mind — but it does. You are constantly problem solving and creating on the fly. Choosing solutions and evaluating your choices. You had no idea you were doing all that, did you. However, even though most people would claim to play golf for fun and relaxation, many of us still allow our games to frustrate and trouble us. This is especially true for seniors. Unfortunately, you probably cannot hit the ball as far as you once did. And your hands are not as steady. You eyesight is possibly a bit worse.

So what’s the best exercise for your mind? Get over it! Don’t let it bother you. Improve you game in other ways. Can’t hit it as far? Work on your chipping. Unsteady hands? Get a good long putter. Can’t see the pin? Ask your friend if he or she can and then lay up. Who knows — concentrate on your short game and you may become BETTER than you were when you could “kill” the ball.

Golf for seniors should be all about fun. Exercise you mind and body correctly and it can be.
