Top Tips For Choosing Outdoor Clothing

Monday, June 14th, 2010

If you intend to do a lot of outdoor activities it is important that you buy the right sort of outdoor clothing. Remember this is the kind that will help to provide ample protection from the elements, but also allow you ease of movement. By ensuring that you buy the right sorts of clothing not only will you be comfortable doing your outdoor activities but you will enjoy them more.

Also by making sure that you buy the right sort of outdoor clothing you are going to be wearing something that could save your life should the conditions turn very bad. It is important that you buy clothes that not only fit but allow you to layer what you wear.

By layering what you wear when it comes to your clothing for outdoor activities you are better able to maintain your body’s core temperature, no matter how bad the weather is. When it comes to the layering of outdoor clothing you will need to have three.

The first or outer layer will be made up of waterproof clothing that is going to protect you not just from the wind but the rain and snow. The next layer or middle one is the one that will provide the insulation your body needs to keep it warm. As for the final layer, your base layer this again provides the body with insulation but helps to keep sweat from your body.

Along with carrying out the functions above each layer of outdoor clothing you wear also helps to trap air between them. Although you may find wearing one thick layer of clothing keeps you warm by trapping air in between each layer can keep you even warmer. Also should you find yourself becoming too warm with the layering system you can then remove items if you need to. Then as soon as you find yourself getting cold again another layer can be added.

When it comes to choosing the right sort of outdoor clothing to wear layered it shouldn’t only feel comfortable when worn, it should also be breathable and able to wick moisture away. If you only choose one layer that has these qualities then the other will not prove as effective at keeping your warm and dry.

The important thing to remember when buying outdoor clothing is to choose those that will provide you with plenty of freedom of movement for the activity you are involved in. For example if you are going to be climbing, hiking or walking make sure that the clothes are not tight fitting otherwise these will prevent you moving easily.

Another thing you should do is always carry additional items of clothing than you actually need. Not only will you then be ensuring that you are well protected from the elements but you are going to remain warm and dry. It is important that along with getting the right sorts of outdoor clothing for the main parts of your body remember getting the right ones for your hands and feet.

Hopefully this article has highlighted the importance of good quality outdoor clothing. Consider also, that different outdoor activities require different outdoor waterproofs and levels of protection against the elements.

Great Outdoor Family Traditions

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Growing up in a small town in the Midwest, my idea of being outdoors usually had something to do with our heavily treed backyard or with one of our heavily peopled city parks. Now I am considerably older and being outdoors today typically means no electricity, no pavement and no one else. There are several exceptions to my new definition of “outdoors” and they can all be lumped into a single category called Family Traditions. Our outdoor traditions are an important part of our lives, see if any of these sound good to you.

First, we like to have tailgate parties. I’m not talking about the ones where everyone shows up at the stadium three hours before the kickoff to have a cookout. I’m referring to the ones where you get as far off the pavement as the road takes you and you have your cookout while listening to the game on the radio. Advantages to this type of tailgating are fresh air, great scenery, no hurry to get to the game or home afterwards and you’re with the people, and only the people, you want to be with. We take the horseshoes and the hammock too. Now that’s a great outdoor family tradition.

Here’s another favorite tradition of ours and this one started when the Y2K panic hit at the end of both 1999 and 2000. We wanted to be off-the-grid when all technology based infrastructure collapsed as the experts predicted. So instead of going to a New Year’s Eve party, we went camping and do so every New Years. This is great fun in most of Arizona but might be a little bit of a challenge in other parts of the state and much of the country on December 31st due to cold weather.

Finally, we’ve made it a tradition to go on a hike in each of the Maricopa County Regional Parks at least once a year. That’s nine parks and at least nine hikes every year. When hiking we also bird watch, geocache, stargaze, picnic or any of a number of other outdoor activities we enjoy. If it gets to be Thanksgiving and we’re behind on our hikes, we get serious and finish them off.

What are your outdoor traditions? If you don’t have any, why not start one now? Do you harvest your own Christmas tree? Do you get a fresh pumpkin each fall? How about a family campout over the Memorial Day weekend? Maybe you can get involved with a group and plant trees, clean up roadways or build trails. There’s lots to do outdoors. Start a Great Family Outdoor Tradition this year. The fun part about these traditions is that we are outdoors with people we enjoy. It simply doesn’t get any better than that. Get Outdoors!
