Beat Selling For Internet Junkies
Everybody is asking how to sell beats online, how it works, etc. The truth is that it’s going to take a lot more hard work than most producers realize. Before even posting up one beat, it’s important for beat makers to comprehend exactly what it is they’re about to be doing.
A lot of people post some beats up, wait for sales to magically happen and when they don’t, they give up. This is foolish because there are so many competing producers online, why would it be so easy?
It doesn’t help that websites such as MyBeatShop and RocBattle are popping up all over the internet. These are called arbitrary beat selling sites and though they may seem like the perfect haven for producers to earn some serious cash, I have my doubts. Most of the people signed onto these sites (if not all) are producers, not rappers, meaning that site’s target audience is YOU, not your clients.
For instance, RocBattle boasts over $500k paid out to producers. Though that may seem like a lot, it’s honestly only about equivalent to a year’s salary split among maybe 15-20 producers. I say that because I know producers who make $36k-$50k per year selling beats using Soundclick, MySpace or offline promotion… So why is RocBattle’s number so low? Easy: because most of the site is compiled of PRODUCERS, not rappers.
I love Soundclick and I use it first because it has 1.4 million rappers signed up to it. That means you have a HUGE target audience sitting there for you to capture sales with.
The only way to make sales on that site, however, is to have a mixture of hot beats, great “buyer friendly” site content, great graphics and awesome customer service. Obviously you can make it sound easy by saying it like that, but even a great looking site may fail if the name of the company is weak or if the slogan isn’t good enough… Of course traffic is important, too, but it’s actually not the most important factor (though you’d think it is).
Having a Buy Now button on your site is an absolute must, and even then you have to do all within your power to make that button look as professional as possible. Licensing information should be easy to read, not long paragraphs but short bullet notes if possible. Make your site as simple as you can while still posting sick beats, having the right price range, etc.
