Book Review – Inside Steve’s Brain – Insider Tips For Internet Marketers
Steve Jobs is fascinating to students of sales management. In a word, he is a paradox. In more words, per Leander Kahney, author of Inside Steve’s Brain, “he is a control freak extraordinaire.”
He’s also a “perfectionist, an elitist and a taskmaster to employees… Jobs is a borderline loony.”
Where’s the genius? How can getting ‘inside Steve’s brain’ offer insider tips to internet marketers? Let’s talk.
It’s true that Jobs seeks to dominate and control. He is known for shouting epithets at employees. There is a flip side to the coin. Internet marketers, pay attention:
Focus: Jobs is completely passionate about what he does. He has an uncanny sense for innovative design and being responsive to what the user/customer wants.
Jobs has been dubbed “Apple’s One-Man Focus Group.” His focus on the achieving his end result, without compromise, is equally applicable to internet marketers.
Without focus on our end result- building connections that will ultimately build sales- our efforts are doomed. That is a loaded concept.
Focus propels daily efforts, powering over, under and through obstacles to success: learning some html code if you’re not a techie (like me), getting up close and personal with video marketing if you’re camera shy. Focus keeps the internet marketer producing-no matter what.
People don’t know what you want until you show it to them: When the Walkman was in development mode, marketing research was not favorable. Jobs did it anyhow. Walkman became one of the highest selling gadgets ever.
Jobs lives by the rule that “people don’t know what they want until you show it to them” Steve Jobs is a walking, talking user experience expert in himself. Steve Jobs may not need user research but that doesn’t mean you, as an internet marketer, should cut corners in that area unless you have that Jobs-like crystal ball sitting on your desktop.
Doing keyword research, religiously, as part of your online marketing is a step that can’t be skipped. But taking creative strides in your writing and video production to make consumers appreciate the value of what you offer and whet their taste buds for more should also be central in your work. Show your audience what they want.
Connections: Despite some less than lovable qualities, Jobs has built collaborative partnerships, both corporate and personal. He has a knack for attracting great talent and forging “harmonious relationships with some of the world’s top brands… including (sic) the big record labels.”
Forging relationships with well known brands is a sophisticated form of taking the internet marketer’s branding efforts to the max. Connection with great brands and individuals has a reflective effect. The shine spreads to those fortunate enough to be in the glitterati circle.
Applying the tips garnered from ‘inside Steve’s Brain’ will keep your internet marketing business on the right track. Even Steve Jobs wouldn’t argue with that kind of success.
