Internet Marketing as a Business – It’s Not a Game, Dummy!
Every day I talk with many different affiliates about a variety of topics. For eight hours (or more) I talk non-stop about which campaigns are converting (and at what rate), how I might be able to increase my affiliates payouts if they deliver volume, and how an affiliate can optimize their website to increase conversions. I may be unique in the sense that I was an affiliate for many years (four years, not exactly “many” in the traditional sense but pretty established in this industry) before I became an affiliate manager, but I am not unique in my position within the industry.
Let’s pause for a moment and think about what I actually just said: “I am not unique in my position within the industry.” The fact is that affiliate marketing is serious business. There are many affiliates who generate millions of dollars per year in revenue and who have gone from nothing to something. People have become fabulously wealthy thanks to this industry, and the online economy was revolutionized by it. Simply put, affiliate marketing is big business.
If you don’t treat affiliate marketing like a business you are leaving yourself at an extreme disadvantage when compared to other affiliates who do treat their online marketing efforts like a business. Despite what you think (or would like to think) about the simplicity or complexity of the industry or the cost of entry, affiliate marketing needs to be approached from a professional point of view that caters to long-term growth that is sustainable and manageable. If you think anything otherwise I can say (with a high degree of certainty) that you won’t be around very long. Internet marketing is here to stay, and those who grab it by the horns and take charge of their online businesses will be the ones that ultimately succeed.
Turning Your “Business” from Nothing to Something
If you have any kind of long-term ambition regarding your internet business and internet marketing endeavors you’re probably trying to find ways to ensure that your online business remains tangible and feasible in the long term. If things like “multi-pronged marketing approach” and “multiple streams of income” are totally foreign to you it may be time to take a few marketing classes at a local university or college so that you can discover traditional methods to expand your business. If you’re an experienced affiliate who’s just in it for the quick buck it may also be time for you to realize that your chances of longevity are rather limited if you don’t explore every possible route you can in order to succeed.
There is no “golden rule” or magic formula that is going to suddenly transform your lackluster performance into something fantastic and amazing, but there are a few business methods that remain true regardless of the medium that they are employed by:
- There is no substitute for common sense. Always approach your internet marketing endeavors with common sense and level thinking. Ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish and why you want to accomplish it. That kind of thought out purpose will be noticed from your customers and appreciated.
- Quality trumps quantity every single time. Don’t lie to yourself and think that if you put up 1,000 hastily launched websites that one of them will be a hit. Take the time necessary for each one to be a hit. Think out the market, the positioning, and the placement of your website. There’s plenty of traffic and money to be had on the internet- it just takes knowing how to get in on the action to take advantage of it.
- Commitment and thoughtfulness are the trademarks of a successful business. Stick to your guns and don’t sell yourself short. You owe it to yourself (and your business) to do everything in your power to remain profitable.
Hopefully you realized long ago just how influential affiliate marketing is (and is going to be), and if you’re smart you’ve already got your websites designed so that they won’t collapse in the near future. After all, internet real estate is becoming quite valuable- hold on to what you’ve got and expand. Perhaps I’ll see you in another four years, still online and still making money.
