What is Internet Marketing Anyway?
By definition internet marketing is a low cost, often free way to market your product or service to a wide audience using the internet. This type of marketing is generally directed at a specific audience and is usually based on keyword searches.
The ultimate goal of internet marketing is to send targeted traffic to a particular website that provides information about a service or product.
To understand internet marketing, you first have to understand that the internet was not designed to sell things. The internet was set up as a means of disseminating information. The more relevant your information the more, likely someone searching for that type of information is to find YOUR information. This is where the marketing comes in. You provide relevant compelling information that demonstrates your expertise, and as an expert you recommend solutions to what your prospects are searching for. (Generally something that pays you a commission)
There are many platforms that are available to you so that you can provide relevant information about your product or service. You can then lead those people who are interested, to your Blog, Lead Capture page or Sales Page. A few of these platforms are listed below.

Hub Pages
YouTube
A Blog is also a good place to post information relevant to a particular product or service. One strategy is to disseminate information through Articles, Squidoo Lenses, Hub Pages and video, than lead interested people to your blog where they learn more about you and the products or services that you promote.
Another aspect of Internet Marketing is Social Networking. Sites like Direct Matches, Facebook, Zenzuu, Twitter, and LinkedIn, all provide you with an opportunity to set up a profile and invite people to get to know you. People buy from those that they know, like and trust. Social Networking gives people the opportunity to know who you are. Some people may ask “Well, how do you make money on Social Networking sites?” The short answer is, You Don’t.
The idea of social networking is to make friends, network with other business people, learn from people who are more experienced and offer help to those who are less experienced. In other words get to know people. A lot of people come to these venues and just their products and businesses. Frankly, it’s annoying and most people aren’t interested.
Once you’ve established you’ve established yourself by participating in these sites, and people know and trust you, you can invite them to see what you have to offer. If you provide a link to other information about you on the web, like your blog for instance, in your profile, people that are interested in you will check to see what else you are doing.
The internet does provide place for you to advertise your business. Here are a few:
Free Classified ads can be placed at USFreeAds.com but a Google search for free classified ads will show you hundreds more. Most of the social networking sites provide adspace that you can buy that shows throughout their network. You can buy low cost ads on popular blogs or in ezines that cater to your target market. There are also listbuilding sites like Your Lucky List or Listbandit that allow you to email their members periodically.
If you are trying to get traffic to a website, by far the quickest way is to buy it.
Pay per click advertising is King. But, make sure you know what you are doing or you could use your shirt. There are also a lot of sites that will send guaranteed traffic to your site, for a fee.
Internet Marketing is a huge animal. This is just a short list of the many ways that there are to market on the internet. The idea is to find a few strategies that you like and become proficient at them. Devise a plan that utilizes the strategies that you have chosen and start marketing.
