Why is Content Still King in Internet Marketing?
Many people make the mistake of thinking that pretty and beautiful are all that you need in order to succeed in the Internet marketing arena. That is, all you need is a pretty site with nice animation and colors, as well as a high-tech look to it, and you can find your visitors pouring in. Some Internet marketers even make the mistake of adding large files to websites, such as videos and music, and putting up large banners and advertisements, as though the web page were made to look like a busy, bustling marketplace. The problem with this is that, as in the real world, appearances can only go so far.
True, scientists have found that excessive surfing can cause people to lose their attention spans when they get into the real world, but that should be a simply bigger challenge for Internet marketers to do their work better, and to create content that would easily appeal to people of all ages, races, ethnicities, demographics, and attention spans. And true, the Internet is a largely visual medium where people go to see the newest in prettiness: but prettiness can get tiring, and when people are looking for things to base their research on, they will hardly be entertained by pretty animation and graphics.
Content is still king in the Internet marketing arena, and Internet marketers are always cautioned to avoid going overboard on the technology. In fact, Internet marketers are asked to always be on the lookout for new content to add to websites, and new ways to make content even more accessible to a wider variety of people. Now make no mistake: in today’s visual world, content is not only about writing, but it is the skilful combination of writing, graphics, and multimedia, all put together in the right combination for a website to look good and catch both the eyes and the mind.
So why is content still king? First of all, the Internet is a place of drastically differing tastes that can change overnight. These tastes have to be catered to with information, and having all this information in text can be fairly easy to write and fulfill, especially if you have a large stable of writers and graphic designers under your command. However, it can be more difficult to tailor to changing tastes via the look of a website and the feel of it. This happens for two reasons: first of all, it can be harder to overhaul an entire website in order to change the look and feel of it, especially if you are operating under the umbrella of a larger company that wants to have a say in every single change that you make to a website.
Second, consumers online want a sense of relative constancy in the websites that they visit. They know where the home and buy buttons are, where they can access the news, and what buttons or links they have to click in order to update their links. You can change content easily in order to inform people, but you cannot change the look of a website too frequently, or you, yourself, may appear to be inconstant. Give people a balanced sense of both sanctuary and dynamics with the website that you are running: have an overall look that will stay for quite a while, but have content that changes constantly in order to meet consumer needs and demands.
Content is king because it is the key to the uniqueness of many websites online. There are only so many permutations and combinations of layouts that are at your disposal when you target a certain age group and demographic; once you’ve exhausted your layout and graphic design skills, your people skills need to kick in. That is, what will appeal to the most number of people possible? That would be content geared specifically toe their tastes. What would appeal to the most number of people possible in different times? That would be constantly updated content. Content is what can set you apart from other websites, especially when it comes to having to compete with other sites in selling products and services.
Last, content is king because it is the means by which you can reach out to your customers. Not everyone will appreciate graphics, especially when they do not suit a person’s needs; but like a customer service agent that knows how to help a customer, well-tailored content will allow you to reach out to your customers and give them what they want and need. So go feed the king that is content, and long live the King!
