AAU 2009 – Still a Great Way to Get Noticed
With the start of school right around the corner, it means that the AAU 2009 season is coming to a close. So why do so many athletes still play AAU and/or USSSA sports in the age of online recruiting and paid recruiting services? The reason why is very clear. Playing in these tournaments and events still works.
Playing AAU 2009 (and every previous season) was effective for two primary reasons.
1. Playing against the best forces you to get better
When you play AAU (or USSSA), you are playing against the best competition. When you play against the best competition, you have no choice to get better. You either get better, or the competition will embarrass you.
2. Playing in these tournaments helps get your name out to college coaches
Playing at this level can never hurt you when it comes to recognition. Some of the coaches involved in AAU have relationships with college coaches. Some of them are former college players themselves. If you did well during the AAU 2009 season, the word will get out about you sooner or later, no matter what sport you play. Don’t expect coaches to beat a path to your door simply because you did well, but if they know your name and then later down the road they get a letter from you, there are much more likely to pay attention to it.
If you got the chance to play the AAU 2009 season, congratulations. You just gave yourself a better chance at playing your sport in college. If you want to take your chances to an even higher level, I strongly suggest you start marketing and promoting yourself to college coaches. An athletic resume and a cover letter can do magic for your chances of being recruited.
