Car rental these days has moved on from just or mainly being picked up from airports. Today people in the suburbs are renting cars for various reasons, eg.to accommodate visitors, to replace your vehicle in the event of an accident, breakdowns or for a different purpose like four wheel driving. When I wanted to travel interstate recently, I elected to rent a hire car rather than use my own. This seemed to make sense as I saved the miles and wear and tear on my own vehicle which was already showing her age.
A side and unexpected benefit was the economy of the much newer vehicle, which helped to justify the cost of a rent-a -car. There are pluses and minuses to renting a car. One area to make sure of is what is the parameters age wise required for renting a car. I was just OK in this case but I now understand that this varies from company to company and state to state and can vary as much as 18 to 26 years of age..
Think carefully when inquiring about a car as to what will be the most economical rental period. The longer the time the cheaper the rate and the better the deals. Don’t forget, also the quoted price is just that and can vary considerably from the end price. This is due to all the add ons they are likely to load you with at the end. Also be very aware of your requirements re insurance. Extra insurance or excess reduction can be expensive and usually not necessary. This is a major area of profit for the rental companies even to the extent of them offering staff incentives to sell it.
Fuel is another potential profit centre for the car hire companies. Always make sure of their policy and check the fuel level before you drive away.Sometimes it will be a full tank and other times it is “bring it back as you have found it.” In either case if you don’t you will be paying one of their staff members to go and top up the tank and that can be expensive.
