How To Grow Your Web Design Business
Everybody assumes web design is the perfect job, the perfect career with a stable client base. This is true of large well established companies, the problem is, for a start-up it is extremely difficult to gain valuable reputation.
Unfortunately you will have to sacrifice in order to gain.
When you first start out you will have little money for trendy offices, flash PC’s and wonderful business cards. Don’t spend your money of fliers – they will simply not bring you back a decent return on investment.
Before you even begin advertising you simply must have a decent looking portfolio.
Now you may think to yourself ‘hm mm catch 22. – I cant get clients without having a portfolio of previous clients.
I’m afraid you will have to offer your services for free. Ask friends, ask charities if they need a site. Build them wonderful sites, try to showcase your skills to their maximum.
When finished you can then use these sites as showcases and start to SLOWLY advertise, try a localized Google ad words campaign, clicks can cost in the region of £4 when advertising nationally, a local campaign should reduce this substantially.
When you get a client and finish the job, offer a referral or even some free work, for example, recommend me to a friend and receive 3 hours of my time for free, or a new page on your site etc.
It is all too easy to think large when you are starting out. Take things slowly, build up a client base anyway you can, you will have to do work on the cheap, or even free. But after a few months time you will be well on your way to having your own staff!
All the best luck with your web design business!
