How to Protect Yourself When Hiring a Web Designer

Many people are scared of getting ripped off when they hire a web designer. This can be easily avoided if you know how to protect yourself from the beginning of the process. In this article I’ll give you a few simple tips that will ensure that your relationship with your chosen designer will be safe, and transparent from the beginning through to the end.

After you have selected the web designer you’re going to hire, make sure that you have a solid understanding yourself of what exactly you want them to do as part of your project. If you don’t have a solid understanding of your projects requirements, then it will set up a bad foundation for the project. Have a good discussion with your designer about exactly what you want to achieve from your web project.

Get everything in writing if possible. Make sure that after you have discussed the requirements of the project, that you get a written document stating exactly that. Make sure that you get a quote from them detailing the work to be performed, along with a cost breakdown for each task. If possible ask them to include dates that various portions of the project will be completed by too. Ensure that the document is on either at a company letterhead, or has been clearly sent from the business e-mail address. If at some point the relationship between you and the designer turns sour, this kind of documentation can provide a certain level of protection from a legal standpoint.

Ask questions. If you are uncertain about any aspect of the project to be completed, make sure that you ask about it. This is a very important point, as you will receive very little sympathy if you decide to change your mind about something critical in the project at the last minute. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a solid understanding of what the project involves, and what the results will be. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you are both working from the same page.

The important thing when going through this process is to make sure that both parties have a solid understand of the project. The more communication there is from both parties, the lower the chances are of anything going wrong. The vast majority of all disputes in this area are simply caused by a lack of communication. Ensure that you are communicating thoroughly throughout the process and your project will be a huge success!
