Finding a good freelance web designer is a hard thing to do in today’s times. For one, what qualifies a person to be a designer? Just because they can make a webpage using an online drag and drop tool doesn’t make them a good fit for your project. Many times, they call themselves designers but you will get a very, very mediocre website with very low SEO foundation integrated into it. So what are some good things to look out for? Technical Skills: This is straight forward. Does the person possess the skills to be able to create a design from scratch? Or does the designer have to use a template and just edit from there? Again; a designer that can code from scratch will have a much bigger advantage and flexibility in what they can accomplish.
Communication: This is a sleeper trait that many do not think about or that they put too much emphasis on technical skills. This goes hand to hand with technical skills and is what is needed to separate the good from the great designers. A great designer will keep in good communication with you the entire process and let you know what the status is of the current milestone. The good ones will usually keep their Skype online while they are on the computer so they are available to communicate whenever you have a question. Of course; fast and swift responses to any questions you have emailed or instant messaged them.
Those are the two main points that can make or break a good designer from the lower quality ones. Remember to ask a lot of questions and filter through the designers and get several quotes before choosing one. A must ask question is: do you have Skype and what is your availability to talk? How many hours do you have available to put towards this project? Can you hard-code from scratch into HTML and CSS or do you only do design? Will you be using a template or an original design you make?
