What to Ask a Web Designer Before Signing a Contract
If you’ve decided that your business would benefit from a custom-designed website, you’re probably right. And if you don’t have the know-how to do it yourself then you are probably considering hiring someone to design your website for you. Choosing a web designer to work with can be a daunting prospect, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some questions that you will want to ask a potential web designer before you sign any sort of contract.
First, you will want to see references and possibly a portfolio of work. For a web designer this means looking at websites that he has designed and possibly contacting some previous customers to inquire about the quality of the service that he provided. If you’ve done your research and looked at many different websites you will know the style of the designer that you are considering and whether it meshes with what you have in mind. Seeing examples of the designer’s work and talking to previous clients is a great way to ensure that the designer delivers on what he promises to do.
You also want to know an estimated turnaround time for designing a website. How much time does the designer spend consulting with you to solidify the design? From there, how long until you get to see and critique a prototype? And of course, how long until the site goes live? Obviously glitches happen and optimum timetables aren’t always met but it is good to clarify the expectations ahead of time so that everyone involved is on the same page.
You may want to know if your designer has any specific qualifications. The title of Certified Internet Web Professional (CIW) can be a nice selling point but it isn’t necessarily the most important thing. What is most important is to see samples of the designer’s work and to feel confident that the two of you can work together to bring your vision to fruition.
One thing you will definitely want to ask about is customer support. If your web designer offers technical support after the website goes live this can be a great asset and even a money-saver. If something happens and your website goes down then you can’t possibly make any money while it is out of commission. A designer who provides enough support to get things up and running again can be worth his weight in gold. Be sure to clarify exactly how much support you will be entitled to receive. It could be anything from 30 days to several months just in case something bad happens.
Once you’ve answered those questions it is time to think about drawing up a contract. This contract should be as inclusive as possible so that everyone involved is clear on what is expected from both parties. It should include design features, specifics of future tech support, estimated timelines for completion, and of course details about pricing. Once everything is in the contract, then you are ready to start working on your website!
